Challenge

Prince Edward Island has lost the majority of its natural forested land, with more space allocated to agriculture and increasing urban expansion. Protected areas need to be placed strategically to maximize their environmental impact. The PEI Forests, Fish, and Wildlife Division sought to understand the efficacy of their protected areas for moving animals across the province. They also wanted to consider the impact of transportation infrastructure and land use type on animal movement. This report was built upon work from previous teams and required updating several deprecated tools.

(1) Circuit theory analysis of natural landscapes on PEI, visualizing animal movement

(2) Yellow areas indicate high flow through a small area (i.e. a pinch point)
